Laura San Giacomo’s Trust in the Director
Laura San Giacomo had previously worked with director Garry Marshall and trusted his vision. In an interview, she recalled how Marshall gave her the freedom to interpret her role.
She said, “I remember him giving me room to fill moments, giving a direction, and then shouting rolling, no time to think too much, really demonstrating to me how much trust he had in what I would come up with on the spot.” This trust helped San Giacomo bring authenticity to her performance.
A Darker Original Concept
The original script for “Pretty Woman” was much darker, focusing on the harsh realities of business escorts in Los Angeles during a time when urban danger and substance abuse were rampant. However, the producers decided to lighten the tone, transforming it into the romantic comedy we know and love.
