Old Hollywood Secrets Revealed In Colorized Photos

Audrey Hepburn with her pet deer Pippen (1958)

Audrey Hepburn has always been recognized for having a big heart, a gentle soul, and a great love of animals. So it’s no surprise that on the set of her film, Green Mansions, the casted deer for the film became Audrey’s offscreen pet. Audrey fell in love with the deer, called it Pippen, and would carry it everywhere, even the grocery store, as shown above when the producers suggested she spend some offscreen time with it.

Judy Garland (1941)

Judy Garland’s life was notably dismal, with the one apparent bright spot being her time as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Ironically, it is said in Hollywood that Judy’s Oz experience was what ultimately ruined her. Because the studio couldn’t find Shirley Temple, they placed Judy in the part of Dorothy instead. Because Judy was much older at 30, production drove her into a disastrous lifestyle while making the beloved picture. She was told to smoke 80 cigarettes a day, consume diet pills and amphetamines, drink black coffee, and occasionally enjoy a bowl of tepid chicken soup broth as a treat. It would launch Judy into a path of addiction that would last the rest of her life.

Actress Mae West and in a Lincoln Dual-Cowl Sport Phaeton (1931)

Mae West was a powerhouse in her day, claiming the titles of dramatist, actress, and trailblazer. She told you precisely what you were getting: a tremendously progressive, sensational, and provocative tone in her films. The film was initially titled It Ain’t No Sin, and 50 parrots were trained to regurgitate the slogan as a marketing gimmick for Belle of the Nineties. Unfortunately, when the Hollywood censor board intervened and forced Mae to alter the title, the parrots were rendered worthless, and they were thrown into the South American jungles, where they are presumably still singing, “It ain’t no sin!” to this day.

Mae West (1934)

Mae West has been dubbed anything from a sexual gangster to hushed whispered whispers about her being a male and black. Of course, none of this has ever been confirmed, but gossip is all the rage in Hollywood, and it’s no surprise that it takes such a harsh aim at provocative sex icon Mae. She had a husky voice, could spout hot one-liners that we still see on our Pinterest boards now, and in the end, she just wanted to utilize her celebrity to offer us a fresh perspective on what it meant to be a woman in a man’s culture.
