Malia Obama’s Journey: From Childhood to Adulthood

Malia doesn’t have any public social media

Unlike many young women her age, Malia Obama doesn’t have any public social media accounts. Her sister, Sasha Obama, started a Twitter account in 2017 but barely uses it. After spending years in the public eye, both Obama daughters prefer to avoid online attention. They do have private accounts for their friends, as Michelle Obama shared in a 2020 conversation with Oprah Winfrey, according to People. Michelle and Barack don’t follow their daughters on these accounts, choosing to give them the freedom to live their lives at college without being watched. “It’s better for them to be checked by somebody younger than me,” Michelle said.

In her first-ever on-screen interview, Malia Obama spoke about keeping a low profile after the intense media attention she and her sister faced during their dad’s presidency. This interview was part of Michelle Obama’s 2020 Netflix documentary “Becoming.” In a clip released by Entertainment Tonight, Malia reflected, “No longer facing that same scrutiny, being able to let all that leave your mind, creates so much more space.”

Malia also shared her thoughts on the love and support shown during her mother’s “Becoming” book tour and for their family. She expressed to Michelle, “This has demonstrated, in a way—it’s like, damn, those eight years weren’t for nothing, you know?” Malia continued, “You see that huge crowd out there and that last… speech you gave—people are here because they really believe in love and hope and in each other.

Donald Glover praised Malia Obama’s writing skills

After her stint working with Lena Dunham on “Girls,” Malia Obama was hired by the multi-talented Donald Glover to write for his Amazon Prime series, “Swarm,” which is inspired by Beyoncé. The show, starring Dominique Fishback as an obsessive fan who goes on a killing spree, premiered in March 2023.

In March 2022, Donald Glover told Vanity Fair that Malia Obama earned her spot on his writing staff through sheer talent. “Her writing style is great,” he said, praising her work in his writers’ room. “She’s just an amazingly talented person. She’s really focused and working hard.” Glover’s brother, Steven, joked that they didn’t go easy on her just because she’s the president’s daughter. “We just hurt her feelings. We can’t be easy on her,” he said. “Nah, she’s very down to earth and cool. So, it’s not a problem at all.” Steven also noted that Malia’s childhood stories provided great inspiration. “Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writers’ room,” he explained, adding that Malia came up with a lot of interesting ideas. “She definitely has a unique perspective on everything.”

Donald Glover also told TMZ that Malia Obama has a bright future in the entertainment industry. He said, “I think she has the potential to pretty much do anything she wants.
