Michelle Obama shared with British Vogue that Malia and Sasha Obama “couldn’t be more different” in some ways. She explained, “One speaks freely and often, while the other opens up on her own terms.” Michelle emphasized that “neither approach is better or worse,” noting that both daughters have grown into smart, compassionate, and independent young women who are fully capable of carving their own paths.
Even though Malia and Sasha Obama have their differences, they’re very close and now live together. They were first seen together in Los Angeles by the Daily Mail in January 2022, which sparked rumors that Sasha moved to the West Coast to join Malia. Some sources even suggested that Sasha might have transferred from the University of Michigan to the University of Southern California.
In November, Michelle Obama confirmed that Malia and Sasha were living together in a Los Angeles apartment. She shared on “Good Morning America” how her daughters hosted a family dinner at their new place. “They had prepared a charcuterie tray and tried to make two very weak martinis,” she recalled with a smile. “They realized they didn’t have all the ingredients, but they were hosting us. It’s just fun watching them become themselves.” Michelle also joked about how the sisters had suddenly become meticulous about their home. “They didn’t care about the watermarks on my table in the White House, but now they have their coasters out,” she laughed.
Malia’s parents, Barack and Michelle Obama, are okay with her dating
Malia Obama’s dating life has been a topic of international interest since her high school prom, which she attended with Secret Service agents and her date. At Harvard, she met British student Rory Farquharson, who ended up staying with her family during the COVID-19 quarantine. Her father, Barack Obama, shared on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” in December 2020, “He was sort of stuck—there was this whole visa thing, he had a job set up, and so we took him in. And I didn’t want to like him, but he’s a good kid.” Malia has also been linked to Ethiopian music producer Dawit Eklund, who also comes from a family involved in politics.
In a November 2022 chat on “Good Morning America,” Michelle Obama spilled some tea about Malia and Sasha’s dating lives. She thinks it’s awesome and totally normal for them to explore relationships at their age. Michelle wants them to figure out what they like and who they are by dating different people. She also mentioned that Barack has gotten good at being a caring dad without hovering too much. “They’re all grown up now, 24 and 21. They’ve done prom and a bunch of other stuff,” she shared.
Barack Obama isn’t too worried about his daughters’ dating lives. In an interview with ABC News, he said, “I don’t worry about it because they’re really solid, smart girls—young ladies now.” He joked that with the Secret Service around, “There’s only so much they can do!” It seems Barack has come to terms with the idea of his kids dating, trusting them to make good choices.
